We’ve been learning about native and non- native Irish trees.
5th & 6th class completed fabulous projects on what they learned about trees and presented these to the junior classes!
Ms Joanne brought in a cutting from a tree known as Kickham Tree.
Charles Kickham, a renowned revolutionary, novelist, poet, journalist - who wrote the song ‘Sliabh na mBan’ - would sit under this tree no doubt getting inspiration for his many famous works. The children could see the many growth rings and make judgements on the way the tree grew!
The children completed a survey to see how many trees they could recognise - they watched videos outlining native Irish trees and non native.
We also went on a nature walk, sidnbark rubbings and found Sycamore, Oak and the Hazel tree in the Bianconi Park. We found beech trees and birch near Fr Joes house.
